The Bay View Neighborhood Association and the Milwaukee County Parks are proud to present the Jamie Breiwick Sextet at Chill on the Hill this week.  You may have heard Jamie Breiwick on 88.9 Radio Milwaukee, 91.7 WMSE or NPR’s Says You!  He can also be found playing regularly in and around Milwaukee with We Six, Clamnation or Chill on the Hill alum, De La Buena.  At age 27, Breiwick has been a fixture on the Milwaukee jazz scene for nearly a decade, with influences ranging from Miles Davis to Bright Eyes to Freddie Hubbard.

The Bay View Neighborhood Association would like to thank everyone who bundled up and braved the elements to attend the 6th Annual Winter Fun in Bay View event on February 10th.  Thanks to massive coordination efforts by Public Spaces Chair, Stephanie Harling, residents enjoyed children’s games, live music and many other activities, including the first annual Chili and Soup Challenge.  Amongst some very tough competition, restaurant participant Challenge winner was Riviera Maya Mexican Restaurant for their delicious tortilla soup.  Conveniently located at 2258 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue, we highly recommend you stop in and order a bowl to see what all the fuss was about.  You’ll be glad you did!

Resident Challenge participant and newly elected at-large board member Mary Fisher won for her black bean chili.  Ms. Fisher has graciously agreed to share her winning recipe with Bay View for your dining pleasure.

Mary Fisher’s Award-Winning Black Bean Chili:

3 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup green pepper
2 - 3 cans black beans - rinsed and drained
2 cans diced tomatoes with green chilies
1 can tomato sauce
1 large can crushed tomatoes
5 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cumin
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ginger

Mix spices together and add to browned meat, onion, green pepper, beans and tomatoes.  Simmer and serve!

Resident Challenge participant and aspiring chef Leah Gray of Hales Corners earned an honorable mention for her chili and we look forward to welcoming her back next year!

The Bay View Neighborhood Association wishes to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Winter Fun in Bay View event so much fun:  The Soup Otzie’s, G. Groppi’s Food Market, LuLu Cafe and Bar, Wild Flour Bakery, Sven’s European Café, Bella’s Fat Cat, Klement’s Sausages, South Shore Park Watch, The Milwaukee Wave, Rainbow Randa the Clown, John Stanos, Triskele’s Restaurant, Riviera Maya Mexican Restaurant and VISIT Milwaukee.  We thank you for your community investment and support.

The Bay View Neighborhood Association’s Chill on the Hill outdoor concert series is one of Bay View’s many gems.  Live music can be found at the Humboldt Park band shell Tuesday nights in summer where friends and families congregate to relax and enjoy the sounds of an eclectic mix of music from week to week.

Summer may seem like it’s a long ways away given the falling snow and further falling temperatures, but it’s time to get planning!  The Chill on the Hill committee could use a few extra hands to plan dates, schedule bands and brainstorm!  The first meeting will be this Tuesday, February 26th at 6:30 at Highbury Pub’s backroom.

BVNA business member Highbury Pub is located at 2322 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue, so grab yourself a beverage and pitch in!

This year’s Bay View Neighborhood Association annual meeting included a special awards ceremony to honor the businesses and individuals who have gone above and beyond for the Bay View Neighborhood Association (BVNA) and for the Bay View community.  The Good Neighbor Award, Volunteer of the Year went to BVNA member Brian Van Klooster for his tireless work championing the Bay View Bash.  The Good Neighbor Award, Business of the Year was presented to Bay View Homes for their instrumental support of the BVNA mission.  Bay View Homes was also recognized along with Columbia St. Mary’s Bay View Family Health Center for their much-appreciated financial support of the Chill on the Hill concert series.

This ceremony was the first to include the Mary Morris Trailblazer Award.  This new award, named after the lauded and much missed Bay View activist, is intended to honor a member of the community who demonstrated initiative, dedication and commitment to Bay View through their trailblazing efforts.  For her vision, hard work and leadership in all aspects of the Bay View Bash, Amy Carlson was selected as the first recipient.
