If you are a Milwaukee Bucks fan, then mark your calendar for Wednesday, December 3rd as the Bucks take on division rivals Chicago Bulls at 7:00pm. The Greenfield Parks & Recreation Department is selling upper level seats for $18 per ticket. That's a savings of $11 off the gate price of $29. Two dollars from each ticket will benefit the Greenfield Parks & Recreation Partners group. Up to 20 participants under age 14 can take part in the "Hi-Five" fan tunnel for the Bucks and their opponent as they enter the court for the 2nd half. Holiday Tree Lighting Just Around The Corner

As I write this, it's the middle of November. Christmas music has been playing on the radio for two weeks, our first measurable snowfall came today, and the Black Friday sales at the stores are coming up at the end of next week. Therefore, it must be time to advertise Greenfield's Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony.

Join us on Saturday, December 6th from 1:00-2:00pm in the Greenfield City Hall Rotunda area for the annual holiday tree lighting. Brighten up your holidays by celebrating with fellow neighbors. Enjoy cookies and hot chocolate while listening to festive music. Children can visit with and have their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Best of all, this is a FREE event for the entire community.

For those who were looking to register their children for the Brunch With Santa event before the tree lighting, it is full and no more registrations are being taken at this time.

Rec Dept. Now Accepts Discover Card For Payment

In addition to Mastercard and Visa as acceptable forms of credit card payment, the Parks & Recreation Department now accepts Discover cards. When paying for programs and services in our office, or registering for programs by mail or fax, you now have the option of paying with one of three credit cards.

Register Now For Annual Community Walk Event

The City of Greenfield Health Department and Parks & Recreation Department are once again co-sponsoring a community walk event for all ages to promote walking for your health. This year's event will take place on Saturday, September 20th at Konkel Park.

Participants are encouraged to pre-register to secure a t-shirt, gift bag, apple, bottled water, and popcorn for the event. The pre-registration fee is $3 per participant and $5 if registering the day of the event. Those attending can choose a one-mile, two-mile, or three-mile route to walk. After the walk, a door prize drawing will be held as part of the "I Spy An Apple" contest at the event.

Coopers Hawk Park Dedication & Ribbon Cutting

Greenfield's newest neighborhood park, Coopers Hawk Park, located at 3460 S. 45th Street, was formally dedicated on Monday, August 25th. Special guests at the ceremony included Mayor Michael Neitzke, Alderpersons Linda Lubotsky, Don Almquist, and Shirley Saryan, former alderperson Don Carlson, and State Legislator Peggy Kruscik. Rebecca Foerst, president of the Mitchell Highlands Neighborhood Association was also on hand, as well as several children and their families from the neighborhood.

Coopers Hawk Park To Be Dedicated

Greenfield's newest neighborhood park, Coopers Hawk Park, will be formally dedicated on Monday, August 25th. The ceremony begins at 6:30pm at the park, located at 3460 S. 45th Street. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will include comments by special guests.

Fall Recreator Now Available

Make some healthy choices this fall with activities and events that are 100% good for you. View our fall program offerings online at the Parks & Recreation Dept's website. Although the online version is now available, the print version will not be back from the printers until about the end of next week. The print version will be mailed to all City of Greenfield residents after Labor Day and additional copies will also be available at Greenfield City Hall and Greenfield Public Library.

Registrations are now being accepted for fall programs through our online active.com service, or by printing and filling out the program registration form from our department's website and send it to us by mail, by fax, or drop it off in our office in Greenfield City Hall.

Here are some new programs that are being offered this fall....

Fitness classes - a toned-down zumba class and a gentle yoga course for seniors (age 55+), and a weight training clinic for those 55 and older offered in cooperation with Southridge Athletic Club. For those 16 and older, the Department is offering a fitness class that uses gliding discs. We are also offering a spin class and a parent/child yoga class in cooperation with Southridge Athletic Club.

Enrichment and safety courses - A workshop on how to use the new Iphone 3G is being offered in October and a Babysitter's Training Instructor course will be held.

Arts & Crafts - New courses include a candy making party hosted by The Chocolate House staff, learn how to dress up your home and sell it quicker by attending a home staging workshop, make a holiday basket by attending a basket weaving class, all new art projects scheduled for the one-day make it and take it classes for those 16 and older, and for youth, act in a drama class or learn how to speak Deutsch in our brand new German classes.

Community Events being offered include a return of past events, including the Walk In The Park event, movie in the park, The BIG Boo, Brunch With Santa, and the City Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Final Movie & Concert In The Park This Summer

The Greenfield Parks & Recreation Department will host its final movie in the park for the summer this Saturday evening, August 16th, at the Konkel Park gazebo beginning at sundown. The feature presentation will be Shrek 3.

PyraMax Bank will provide FREE popcorn (while supplies last) and a visit from Moola Moose. Conessions will also be available. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on and don't forget the bug spray.

On Tuesday, August 19th, the Department will host its final Concert In The Park from 7:00-9:00pm at the Konkel Park gazebo. The Rhythm Kings will be performing a music style that includes rock, jazz, blues, disco, and songs that are popular today.

No registration is required for either event, but call our cancellation hotline at (414) 297-9008 in the event of inclement weather to see if the event will be cancelled.

Great Turnout for National Night Out

The University of Wisconsin Marching Band was a highlight at Greenfield's National Night Out event on August 5th at Konkel Park.

Greenfield residents packed Konkel Park on Tuesday evening for the City's 2nd Annual National Night Out event. The event was coordinated and co-sponsored by several City departments and featured live music from Becca and the Boys, informational booths from the Health and Police departments, the American Red Cross, and GreenfieldNOW.com. Police, fire, and public works vehicles were on display, and children had the opportunity to dunk the D.A.R.E. officer. The evening capped off with a performance by the University of Wisconsin Marching Band and a flashlight walk.

UW Marching Band Performing at Konkel Park - Greenfield National Night Out Event

Greenfield’s 2^nd Annual National Night Out (NNO) will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Konkel Park from 5:30-8:30 PM.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Thanks to a generous donation from Dan Jansen Family Fest, entertainment at this year’s NNO will include a special “5^th Quarter” show and revue by the University of Wisconsin Marching Band at 7:15 PM.

The NNO will also feature displays by the Greenfield Police and Fire Departments, public works and health department as well as community partners; children’s games and entertainment, including a performance by the band Becca and the Boys. Food will be provided at no cost (while supplies last). This year’s event will also feature “Dunk the DARE Officer” where children can try their luck at the dunk tank, sending DARE Officer Jim Pizur into the drink.

The Whitnall High School Pool experienced a circulation pump failure this afternoon. We are trying to reach all swim lesson and adult water fitness participants to let you know that we will have to cancel the swim session and water fitness classes currently being held. There will be NO classes held this evening, Thursday or Friday. Please realize this is beyond the control of the Parks & Recreation Dept. With the already scheduled filter replacement next week, the school district will now be repairing or replacing this circulation pump as well. We are unable to schedule make up classes because following the repairs the Girl’s High School swim season will be starting.

You will receive a copy of your child’s skill sheet and a credit slip for the missed classes in the mail as soon as we can pull them all together, please be patient.

Over $5,500 Raised At This Year's Mini-Golf Tournament

On Saturday July 26th teams representing various city departments, community organizations and vendors participated in the annual Greenfield Partners of Parks and Recreation Mini-Golf Invitational at River Falls Family Fun Center. This year's event raised over $5,500 to benefit the Partners of Parks and Recreation. The Partners of Parks and Recreations mission is to assist the department in the beautification of green space, purchase of park amenities, and the development of park site activity areas to benefit the Greenfield community.

We would like to thank all our contributors including our event sponsors The Blood Center of Wisconsin, Ehlers and Associates and Dan Jansen Family Fest, Inc. as well as our event co-sponsor Horizon Development. We would also like to thank River Falls Family Fun Center for the use of the facilities.

Surf's Up at Konkel Park

Don't forget about the second movie in the park this Saturday night at Konkel Park. The Parks & Recreation Department will be showing the movie Surf's Up at sundown. The event is free and is being sponsored by PyraMax Bank, who will once again be serving free popcorn and have Moola Moose on hand to greet participants. Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on and don't forget the bug spray. Movie will be shown at the Konkel Park gazebo by the parking lot (51st & Layton).

Favre or Not - Join Us At Lambeau Field!

Has the latest talk about Brett Favre coming back to play have you thinking about the upcoming Packers season? Will the legendary quarterback be on the field again for the upcoming season or will he hang it up for sure? Regardless if we see Brett Favre wearing number four again this season, you can join the Greenfield Parks & Recreation Department on Sunday, August 3rd at Lambeau Field for the annual Green Bay Packers Family Night & Scrimmage. The Parks & Recreation Dept. will be returning to this event for a fourth consecutive year and the trip will once again be led by Mike Seavert, Whitnall Middle School teacher and 2004 Green Bay Packers Fan Hall of Fame finalist.

As of this blog posting, less than 100 tickets remain for our group. This year, the group will be sitting in Section 132, which is the southwest corner of the end zone. The Department is once again offering a tickets only and tickets and transportation option. If you would like to purchase tickets only, cost is $8 per person (face value of ticket). The tickets and transportation option is $32 per person, which includes a ticket to Family Night and transportation to and from Lambeau Field via a motorcoach bus.

Whether it's the beginning of the Aaron Rodgers era, or continutation of the Brett Favre legacy, you can see all the players in action. On field football drills begin at 6:30pm, with the scrimmage beginning at 7:30pm, followed by jersey giveaways and a fantastic fireworks show that have proven to be better than your typical 4th of July fireworks show.

Online registration is not available for this event. Stop in the Rec. Dept. or mail in your form today. The Stanley's To Perform At Konkel Park

The second concert in the Department's Concerts at Konkel series this summer will be on Tuesday evening, July 15th. The date in the summer Recreator activity guide incorrectly lists the date as July 19th. The Stanley's is a four piece band playing an edgey version of 70's, 80's, and 90's rock. The group plays artists like "Killers", "REM", "Blink 182" and even Johnny Cash! The concert is from 7-9pm at the Konkel Park gazebo (51st & Layton Ave.) Admission is FREE, but concessions will be available for sale. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, a picnic basket filled with muchies and enjoy a great night of musical entertainment. We hope to see you at the park on Tuesday night.

Special WPRA Week at Six Flags

If you plan on visiting Six Flags Great America & Hurricane Harbor between now and Sunday, you can still get in on the special admission rate as part of Wisconsin Park & Recreation Association week. The Parks & Recreation Department is selling adult admission tickets for this special week for $29. That's a savings of just over $27 off the gate price! In addition, a complimentary parking pass is also available. Take advantage of the savings this week by stopping in the Parks & Recreation Department office through Friday 6pm. Otherwise, the Department sells discounted Six Flags tickets for $36 per ticket through the end of the season (Labor Day weekend). We do not sell child tickets....adult tickets only.

Medallion Not Turned In...2nd Chance Winners Named

Another medallion quest has come to an end! The contest officially ended this afternoon. The medallion was not turned in to the Parks & Recreation Department office by the deadline today (12 Noon). Three second-chance winners were drawn from the entries received. The winners are:

1st Place - Mike Kolasinski (wins the Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Resort/Six Flags/Dinner Certificate package)

2nd Place - Heidi Krenz (wins $20 dinner gift certificate)

3rd Place - Ardell Bergin (wins $20 dinner gift certificate)

Congratulations to the second chance winners! If you were stumped and did not know where this year's medallion was hidden, it was located in Haker Park, on the playground above the lion play structure in a magnetic keybox under the observation deck.

Ponder this clue but keep it under observation.

Investigate the park with “spring” water and fresh air.
Study your surroundings-you’re almost there.

“Victory” refers to the medal, which is used as the “medallion” for 2008 quest and this clue encourages questers to keep looking. “Under observation” means that the medallion is under an observation deck on the park’s playground equipment. “Spring” refers to Cold Spring Road which further suggests Haker Park, which also has an open air shelter(fresh air).

“Looking up” suggests that questers look above something, and if you were in the correct park as directed by the previous clues, this last clue will lead you directly to the Victory medallion, hidden inside a magnetized “hidden key” container.At the Haker Park playground, there is a lion head as part of the play structure that is in a prominent, clear spot. The magnetized keybox with the medallion inside was located above the lions head, under the “observation” deck of the playground structure.

The Greenfield Parks & Recreation Department will once again host a series of Movies In The Park. The FREE event is open to all families and will feature a G or PG rated movie. Movies will be shown at sundown at the Konkel Park gazebo.

The first feature will be tomorrow night, Saturday, June 21st, with the showing of Bee Movie. Other movies will be shown on July 26h (Surf's Up) and August 16th (Shrek 3).
