Trustee Langer Resigns From Germantown Fire Department...

By Al Campbell
Monday, Dec 17 2007, 05:41 AM

Trustee James Langer has apparently tendered his resignation from Paid On Call status in the Germantown Fire Department.  This happened a few days ago according to sources.

This is a laudable first step on his part and the citizens should thank him for this action.

It does not, however, eliminate the fact that he has a perceived bias while continuing in his role as chairman of the Public Safety Committee.

President Kempinski should now make the rest of the decision and remove Mr. Langer from that committee.  Langer will still have his vote on issues that come before the trustees as a whole and could still be asked by the committee to lend his insight to its deliberations, but the committee's actions while he is still involved as either chair or member will be presumed tainted...whether or not actually tainted.

There has simply been too much of a questionable nature going on in this situation and this must be put to rest for the benefit of the entire community.  We're all too familiar with the phrase...perception is reality.

Thanks Trustee Langer for beginning the process of resolving this festering situation.  I hope that President Kempinski will take the last step in the next few days.

I have enjoyed working for this department for coming up on five years.I even travel from Pardeeville because of the people there.  The first questionable act I noticed was in the hiring process I participated in a couple years back.hlhlhlkh  Now I want to be clear I have a Full time FD job with the Airport in Madison and enjoy working here.  I also want to say that I am not at all displeased with the candidate they selected.  He is highly motivated and does a fine job.  When a person goes to interview for a jire department (having done this alot). The panel consists of the top brass and maybe one or two nbc"floor" members.  They ask you JOB related questions to asss your experience and cognative ablility.  When I entered the room the Chief and two deputies were seated at his desk in the back and board members were seated arround the interview table.  I did not think too much of it at first until questions like who is the school superintendant came up.  I answered respectively, by saying that I did not live in GTown at the time and nor was I married or supporting any children, and that were I to be hired that moving here would become a priority.  But what does that have to do with me working here as a firefighter. The devils advocate can say that I should have researched the community if I were truly interested.  And that may be but, I felt as though they were not turly interested in what I had to offer.  I am hoping the chief had input into the descision But I felt that (especially knowing all of the recent info)they did not want the chief and his deputies to handle and hire his own employees.

As for anything with Mr. Langer anything I had to say would all be coming from hearsay.  I will say that if you have problems in positions like fire and police they have "chain of command" for a reason, and being in your own chain of command is never acceptable that is why we have things like accountablity and oversight.  This is a nice place to work and I hope it continues to be but, I can tell that the atmosphere has changed in a sour way lately.

Well, Langer resigning from the fire department is an interesting step, but is it actually a stepin the right direction?  We shouldlook at WHY he resigned...  Due to his bias toward the Fire Chief?  Due to his conflict of interest regarding several actions and commitees he's on?  Due to his failure to be able to perform the duties of a fire fighter?  Regardless, I feelit IS a step in the right direction.

I think you are correct, Mr Campbell, that president Kempinski should do the right thing and remove him from any commitee that directly effects the fire department.  How can he NOT have a bias against the chief?  Can the Chief have his car allowance back?  Can he park his vehicle inside yet?   Until these absurdities are changed, one less firefighter is all we have, and this preposterous witch hunt will continue.

Rummer Muller,

Sadly, his resignation is from the fire department ONLY.  So now he can't kill himself or others DIRECTLY.  He'll sit behind the veil of corruption and probably kill MORE people through crooked votes, tainted decisions and attempts to mess with the real heroes who are just trying to do their jobs.

So let's recall them both, and anyone else they have in their pockets!

Has everyone seen the vote of the fire department under the 'Pulse of Germantown' on the homepage? I encourage everyone to vote and let their voices be heard!!! Maybe we can finally make a difference in this village!
