Nasty Turn For G'town Politics...

By Al Campbell

I received a postcard yesterday telling me much that someone thought was wrong with Mel Ewert, one of the gentlemen who represent me as Trustees on the Village Board.  My first thought was that this was one of those relatively new creatures in politics that don't have to divulge their funding sources and which can publish advertisements against candidates.

That is bad enough in my opinion since anyone has the right to make their beliefs known, but to do so behind the 'skirts' of an anonymous organization makes this much, much worse.  Laws permit such advertising and we've seen a ton of it in the state Supreme Court race.

In a companion article on GermantownNow, I note that the village has reported this activity to the state Election Board as coming from an unregistered entity.  This complaint discussed the fact that regulations require such registration if the organization in question spends more than $25.00.

I understand that several versions of this card were sent.  I received the one decrying Mel Ewert while others involved Dean Wolter, Bill Steitz and Anita Hilleman.  Some were against candidates and others were for candidates.  Mr. Ewert was cited as referring to the recent vote on funding for a developer that was approved by the Village Board.  Those current trustees that were targeted were either castigated or praised based upon how each had voted on that bonding issue.  A vote in favor carried praise for the candidates that supported the action.  I was frankly concerned with the quote attributed to Anita Hilleman who supposedly stated that she was please to receive the support.  I imagine that was before she knew what appears to be behind this activity, and I would hope she will modify her apparent position on the subject now that the 'shadiness' seems to have been exposed.

The organization is shown as 'Germantown Citizens United' and its address is listed as N116 W21040 Brynwood Lane in Germantown.  I've not tried to determine the name of the resident at that address; I'm sure that others are about to or will soon make that known.

I certainly hope that this will not prove to have been that one thing that pushed Germantown politics over the edge and into the gutter.

Yesterday you wrote a story about questionable facts vs real facts. Today you wrote a story about cards in the mail, using questionable facts as real. Try to be consistant. Dean Wolter was not mentioned on any card. Whoever sent them does not have to register. As far as pushing Germantown politics into the gutter, you're one year late worring about that.

Sounds like sour grapes Charlie!  The facts are in the Campaign Finance Records of The Committee To Elect Peter Sorce.  Why did real estate developers and attorneys OUTSIDE of Germantown contribute?  Why did someone from ASSET DEVELOPMENT contribute?  Not to mention John Gehl and his agent. Perhaps The Curmudgeon should read the report filed only two days ago at the Village Hall. Then just google the names - you'll find or their spouses easily enough. Just WHO really is this Citizens United?

You're right, Patty, about sour grapes, except that they are coming from the people that are getting hit this time around. What goes around comes around.

Politics in Germantown has reached a new low. As a past trustee I was honored to serve the village of Germantown. The other board members were a dedicated, honest, and committed group that I may not have always agreed with, but I was confident were committed to the best interest of the village and not just doing what it took to get re-elected. How times have changed. Special interest groups now are funding campaigns, spreading distortions of facts about candidates that have not supported them in the past.Special interst groups sending out postcards and pre-recorded phone messages in support of specific candidates. Don't be fooled by these interlopers. They have on interest in Germantown, only their personalal interst.

I have to agree with you, Tom. The distortion of facts is not new but big funding is. I never received more than a couple of hundred dollars for any of the eleven elections I went through except for last year when several businesses sent me money to level their chances, no matter who won. I got about $300. I was blown out of the water by my opponent who collected over $2000. Where we go from here, I have no idea.

G-Town District 4 Resident

I agree with Tom, the politics in Germantown have reached a new low.  I received postcards and pre-recorded messages today from a special interest group that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel states is supported by a development group from Milwaukee.  Why is it so important for this group outside of Germantown to get control of our Village Board?  This is a special interest group that is marketing false statement to ensure their candidates are elected.  I hope Germantown residents can see past their deceptions.  Charlie, perhaps you can answer these questions because it is interesting that all the candidates that they are backing are also the candidates that you are backing.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Dist 4 Resident - Mr. Hargan should be able to answer your questions - he is the Treasurer for The Committee to Elect Peter Sorce.  He knows exactly where the money came from. Tarantino:  Low income & senior housing developer.  John Gehl:  that certainly explains alot.

Michael McGee's attorneys?  Maisterman & Lerner.  The list goes on.

I've been asked where these Funds for Peter Sorce came from. If you compare the donors, you'll find that many of them are the same ones who donated large amounts to Tom Kempinski's campaign last year so to assume I have anything to do with them is wrong. Tarantion gave more to Tom. Senior housing there, yes. Low income? No. Have you checked the cost at the Gables? Upper end retirement.

Not one of the candidates that received favorable comments knew the cards or phone calls were coming. You also forget that Pres. Kempinski was the swing vote on the Asset Dev. sewer project, making it 5-4. I think he did the right thing.

Thanks, Al for making this forum possible. When it comes to being Peter's Treasurer, that's what I am. I did not solicit one dollar, I just took care of them when they were handed to me by Mr. Sorce.
