The main business district areas on Oakland and Capital may be better identified by the use of sidewalk canopies.
Their purpose is for sheltering and shading, projected over the sidewalk area to enable easy access for walking and for patio-type restaurants along buildings in the sidewalk area.
The structures may also support solar panels designed for this purpose. In this way “walkability” can be extended into colder months with heating provided by solar panels.
Additional methods can be used for further enclosure of these outdoor walking areas. Appropriately designed, all this will support the energy of the street and the image of our “walkable community.”
