CITY AS ARCHITECTURE and AS ART.

By Joe Mangiamele

Thomas Jefferson believed that “architecture is among the most important arts.”

I wish we could bring that notion in its importance to our efforts in the redevelopment of Shorewood.  Jefferson saw the architecture of London at that time, as inferior to that of Paris and he had the frankness to say so.

We have a number of architects living in Shorewood.  But we do not have a Jefferson to bring them all together,  and in some way then begin giving a superior visual quality to our village.  Don't we need that architectural and artistic component, that Jeffersonian approach to  the development of our future community?

At the moment we are seeing the beaurcratic hardness and yet the ragged edges of market-oriented development, devoid of true artistic character or of village spirit.
