Nighty, Night...Don't Sleep Tight...

By Janet Evans

A vote.

Is that too much to ask for?

Is it too much to ask for the Senate to do the right thing for the American people?

Just a vote.

No...instead, two weeks ago, Nancy Pelosi decided to let the Senate go into recess rather that take a vote on FISA legislation that would allow our spies to intercept foreign communications.

“Half of all the information we obtain on future attacks against our nation comes from electronic surveillance, according to National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, who warned that failure to pass the Senate bill will degrade all intercepts by two-thirds. We can’t expect intelligence officials to connect the dots when they have one arm tied behind their back collecting them.”  This from Vito Fossella and Peter King, Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York.

Outrageous.....

They also say,

"Make no mistake — American is more vulnerable to attack today than it was just two weeks ago. In the Senate, Democrats and Republicans worked with the administration to pass a bipartisan bill. The question is, will the House stop playing politics and do the right thing for America?"

The Democrats say they haven't had enough time to act on this legislation.

But they have had since last April.

This is serious.

Pelosi is reckless.

Pelosi and House Democrats do not care about protecting the citizens of the United States of America.

And remember...Pelosi can sleep tight...

If we have a national security risk, she is whisked off to a safe haven...

You on the other hand, should sleep with one eye open....

Janet,

Politics of fear??? That hasn't worked out too well for the Republicans - or has it??? I thought a 20 something approval rating was bad;-)

Steve.

What Steve fails to mention ( or recognize) is that the Democrat-controlled Congress has had, for a long time, worse ratings than an unpopular Republican President.

Facts have never been a strong point with the left. If it doesn't fit on a bumper sticker, they're lost.

I admit it, Steve, I fear the Reaper....when people like Pelosi are calling the shots....

Sorry, this is reality and Pelosi is playing politics.  : (

And tell me those feelings you have for Obama weren't there for Bush in the months following 9-11?  If Obama became president and made a decision against what you believe, would you abandon him too?

FISCHER,

You get me laughing!!! "for a long time"

What??? Nov. 2006??? Yeah - that's a long time..........

O.K. Kevin, I'll give you this one. That first 100 days thing sure flopped on the Dems............

Janet,

Pelosi is playing politics - they ALL play politics - but she plays more than the rest because of her position.

To your other question - yes - I would abandon him. If a guy I voted for started a WAR by feeding us bs info - yeah - give him the Mussolini treatment.

Now, will you drop your gaurd and join us Obama folk?!?!

Steve.

We sure have come a LONG way from the era of a president's reassuring words and level gaze ("The only thing we have to fear is fear itself") to the threats we're subjected to by our own leadership ("You are with us or against us. Vote for us or your worse fears will come true.")

Time for pasture, George W.  Swagger for the cows, and go make some REAL money.

Janet Evans

O.K.

But what about FISA?

February 28, 2008 9:40 PM

Becky

FISA is deeply flawed and needs to be fixed. The Democrats appear to be TRYING to do just that while the fear-mongers monger their fear. Bush & Co. are once again spreading disinformation.

I don't see where the Democrats want to deny our intelligence agencies the tools they need. To say that "Pelosi and House Democrats do not care about protecting the citizens of the United States of America" is silly - childish, even.

Maybe you should go back and read the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and note the changes this administration has demanded.

We don't have to shred the civil liberties of American citizens in order to be "safe."

Pelosi’s refusal to pass the Senate bill through the House is the Democrats looking for political donations from the trial lawyers.  That's the talk.

Pelosi received a letter from most of the “Blue Dog” Democrats telling her they would vote for the Senate bill. Added to Republican votes, the Blue Dog's votes would have enabled the bill to pass on a majority vote.

Imad Mugniyeh, one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, was killed in Syria last week. Hizballah has threatened revenge against the United States and Israel. Let's hope we can get the intelligence we need.

Pelosi and House Democrats cared more about baseball and steroids than the FISA vote two weeks ago.  To make a FISA warrant for a new intelligence target have to be written, and take hours...while a life may be at stake, or critical intelligence information may be lost...tell me they don't care about protecting citizens.

Thanks for your opinion.

I appreciate your honest comment.  I still disagree and don't appreciate being further manipulated by this utterly failed administration.

February 28, 2008 11:17 PM

Fred Keller

I hate to crash this little “Obama knows best” party with facts, but here they are:

FACT: The Democrat-controlled senate passed the “FISA Amendments Act of 2007,” 68-29-3 (Obama, Clinton and Graham did not vote).

FACT: Twenty of those 68 “yea” votes were cast by Democrats, including Herbie “The Milkman” Kohl.

If my math is correct that means 20 Democrat and 48 Republican senators voted in favor of the amended FISA Bill.  So, Schreiner, Becky, tell everyone, what would you call those 20 senators; “fear-mongers” or Democrats?

February 29, 2008 10:42 AM

Becky

All true, Fred. I might call those 20 senators lots of not-so-flattering names.

But, I don't know why what you say is relevant to the discussion. Do you assume that those who disagree with the current administration must therefor cheerlead for everything the Democrats do? They are CERTAINLY not above my criticism.

I can give you a LOOONG list of votes I think Democrats wimped out on or "dealt away." I don't join political teams and rave about "our side" regardless of what they do.

But I do appreciate what House Democrats are doing, even if their senate counterparts fell short and succumbed to the politics of fear.

"Pelosi and House Democrats do not care about protecting the citizens of the United States of America"? THAT'S what I think is dead wrong.

By the way, Russ Feingold voted NO, yet another reason history will vindicate him.

Whoops, almost forgot............

Doesn't it really tear you up that Republicans are stuck in the mud spinning their tires playing party politics??? Doesn't it tear you up even worse that you'll still defend them.................
