Like President Kennedy’s assassination, the Challenger disaster, and of course we will never forget 9-11.  But there are other things that happen that touch different people in different ways.  Charles Manson, Kent State; well there are things on the upside, too…not everything was bad…Woodstock for instance.  But today and the next couple days to follow marks the anniversary of an event that, as a very young mother, just put chills through me.  I never would have thought there were such randomly evil people in our country back in 1982, but there were, and there were more to follow.

On September 29, 1982, a 12-year old girl named Mary Kellerman, who lived in Elk Grove Village, IL died.  Why?  She had taken an Extra Strength Capsule of Tylenol.  Later that day, in the hospital,  Adam Janus died .  He was from Arlington Heights.  Then, when his family was mourning Adam’s passing away, his brother Stanley and wife Theresa, who had Tylenol from the same bottle, also died.   They were from Lisle, IL.  Sometime later, there were several more incidents of death; Mary McFarland, of Elmhurst, Paula Prince, Chicago, and Mary Reiner, of Winfield.  The obvious link to Tylenol was found quickly, to the credit of investigators, and the public was warned immediately.

I was so disturbed that the family was distraught over the fact that their brother had died, and had taken the Tylenol, and then there were two more victims.  I distinctly remember other family members speaking about it on television.  About how much stress Stanley Janus was under and the headache he had.  It was very sad and painful.

And so, now it began.  We no longer could feel safe purchasing medications and food products in the store.  Safety protection on all products.  No more loose, time-released capsules.  Trust no one.  Life changed very much after September 29, 1982.  I guess there’s something about September. 

 

1982: Cyanide-filled Tylenol cause multiple deaths

"Two brothers and a 12-year-old girl died in two different Cook County suburbs yesterday, poisoned by capsules of pain remedy contaminated with cyanide," reported the Syracuse Herald Journal on September 30, 1982. The Tylenol poisonings killed a total of seven people from the Chicago, Illinois area. NOTE: Although officials believed the tamperings occurred at supermarkets or drug stores, a nationwide recall of all Tylenol products was issued. Several men were arrested for the crime; however, no one was ever convicted of the killings.”

It has been reported from the United Kingdom that hundreds, 1500 to be exact, non-Muslim Brit's have been recruited by Al-Qaeda to form a "white army of terror" and carry out attacks within the United Kingdom.

The white recruits are sought out in places such as prisons, where the individuals are susceptible to being converted out of loneliness and the need for comfort and support. 

Religion is most often not mentioned, and radical planning and intentions proceed as time moves on.

These claims are being disputed by Muslim leaders.

It’s interesting to read some of the U.K. citizen’s comments on the site of the article to see their perspective on things.  One even says “I don’t believe that Al-Qaeda exists.”

Sara Jane Moore, whose 1975 assassination attempt on President Gerald Ford was foiled in San Francisco, was released today from a Dublin prison.


Moore, 77, had been scheduled for release on Tuesday, but she was instead freed a day early.

Moore pleaded guilty to attempted assassination and was sentenced to life in prison. She was released after 30 years because she had not broken prison rules, said Tom Hutchison, chief of staff for the U.S. Parole Commission.

The mother of four children, Moore fired a single pistol shot at Ford on Sept. 22, 1975, as the president stood in front of the St. Francis Hotel, near Union Square. She missed, mostly because a bystander knocked her arm away as she fired.

Her attempt came less than three weeks after Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme pointed a loaded revolver at Ford in Sacramento. She was arrested before she could fire a shot.

Boy this makes me "unglued."

Of all the people sentenced to Life in prison you are going to release a criminal who tried to kill a President?

So will we release Charles Manson next?

I'm so happy Moore didn't break any rules while in prison.

What a good girl she was.

Life should be Life.....  I don't care if she is 100 years old.

CBP in Norfolk, Va. Intercepts Smuggled Socks Worth More than $1.5 Million

 

Norfolk, Va. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Norfolk, Va. port of entry made a significant seizure of socks that had been smuggled into the U.S. over several months and had false country of origin markings.

CBP officers and import specialists discovered the socks in six overseas shipping containers. The shipments arrived during a period from May to November. More than 2,900 cartons seized had a domestic value of more than $1.5 million.

CBP was able to determine that socks manufactured in China had been commingled with socks produced in Ghana. Many of the Chinese-origin socks were declared to CBP not only as products of Ghana, but as eligible for duty-free treatment under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, legislation designed to provide trade benefits to eligible sub-Saharan African nations. Working with other federal agencies and the government of Ghana, CBP was able to determine that Chinese socks were imported into Ghana for subsequent exportation to the United States. Strong enforcement provisions within the Africa growth act legislation, including the requirement of an effective visa system by beneficiary countries, and close cooperation with Ghana Customs authorities contributed to the enforcement actions taken by CBP.

The incorrect origin claims appear to have been made in an attempt to circumvent a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of the United States and the People’s Republic of China that sets import levels for certain textile products. A directive to the Commissioner of CBP from the Chairman of the Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements mandates that CBP implement such levels. "CBP's primary responsibility is preventing terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the country, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel,” said Mark J. Laria, CBP’s area port director. “This is a case of illegitimate trade that provides an unfair advantage over those obeying import laws."

CBP maintains a robust trade enforcement program to ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing all imports. Many different schemes are used to evade duty or quotas on imported textile and apparel goods. Some of these are circumvention of quotas by illegal transshipment (changing the country of origin of the goods), providing false documents, using false labels or providing incorrect descriptions of the merchandise.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. ___________________________________________

What the hell is going on with China anyway?  Toys, pajamas, toothpaste, now SOCKS? 

Maybe it is time to re-think very carefully about just WHERE we are

OUTSOURCING our businesses.                                                                                                                                                    

Especially when China executes the former head of its food and drug agency.  WHAT does that tell us? 



It used to be embarrassing to have something in your home that said “made in China” on it – you know, “low quality.” 

Unless it actually was “china.”  Now, I look at tableware that says “made in China” on it and I’m afraid to cook with it.  No

one has said don’t use cookware yet. But if there is lead paint in toys, is there lead paint in my pie plate?   


So what do you think about all of this?   


We’re supposed to be looking out for terrorist attacks and we’re fooling around with SOCKS?

I can tell you, I’m a little bit “unglued” about ALL of it!
