It's TIME for Obama AGAIN

Looks like 7 is Obama’s lucky number.

He's been on the cover of Time seven times this year and McCain has been on twice (H/T Drudge).

There are Democrats who are nervous that you are not tough enough for the general election.

"I don't think that's just about me. I think they are congenitally nervous because we lost a bunch of presidential elections where people felt that we should have won, but keep in mind that whatever concerns people have about me, my campaign in particular, we heard those all during through the primaries, and the reason—as I said in this town hall meeting—that I think we're going to be successful is it's not about me. It's about the American people, it's about the fact that their wages and incomes have flatlined, their costs have gone up, they are losing their homes. They are losing their health care. They are worried about the future.

The Republicans are going to want to try to focus this election on me, what I want to do is focus this election on the American people and who can actually deliver for them. There's nothing new about this approach that they are taking. This is the same approach that they took against John Kerry and Al Gore and tried to take against Clinton. And so, as I said, what I think makes the difference this time is people understand this is a big election. We can't afford to keep on doing the same things we've been doing—the same policies or the same politics."

Finally the first airline (American) that will offer Wi-Fi on coast-to-coast flights began doing so yesterday.

Would you pay $12.95 to surf the net for three hours on a flight?

I can see the increase of laptops going through security now...

For many it will be used for work. But I think for most it will be used for play.

I just think having the option available is a good idea, and the airlines will make a significant amount of money from it.

Franklin Common Council Meeting 08/19/08 #3

I'm not posting the entire meeting...once again, I believe our city government should be broadcasting these meetings on the web. I shouldn't have to be doing it. We're behind in the times. But speaking of being behind in the times...besides using a cassette tape for recording their meetings, it appears that the offices are an organizational mess. It first sounds like lack of staffing. If our city is dealing with complaints and violations from the 70s that aren't resolved yet, there's a problem.

In the second podcast you'll hear Mr. Luberda says he just had a complaint that existed of 100 items, and he had to make the decision as to what items were important, and he paired it down to what he alone believed were 14 valid items to act upon. That seems to me to be quite a bit of micromanaging. If Mr. Luberda has to go through every complaint in the city and troubleshoot it besides all the other duties he has, no wonder nothing is getting done.

I also have to question his prioritization. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since there has been some turnaround in employment. Then again, these problems have been going on for quite some time. Somewhere some of this is going to have to be put in the lap of administration. It can't be thrown in the faces of bottom level office staff.

Lastly, do I hear correctly (yes, I know I do hear it correctly) on the tape that Alderman Sohns says that Mr. Rhiner has the Fox file/information on and off again? Why is that? Why would Mr. Rhiner, a volunteer of the community have any files related to this case? If you are on the 27th Street Steering Committee or the Economic Development Commission as an unelected member, or not an employee of the city, does this entitle you to have official paperwork related to violations? That....is the question of the day.

The Common Council wrapped up discussion on this issue talking about problems in the offices of city hall with paperwork, keeping up on complaints, and the Fox's court appearance and whether it was in fact scheduled for today, August 20, or cancelled/postponed (it was). Alderman Sohn's responds that he will not resign....as expected. he says the Mayor violated City ordinances and State law.

He believes it is a disservice to the Fox' s that the city sat on the complaint for over a year.

Alderman Wilhelm and Alderman Taylor both state complaints must be investigated and ordinances enforced.

Alderman Wilhelm is concerned that the Aldermen are not being kept informed.

Mayor Taylor Calls for Alderman Sohn's Resignation

At last night's Common Council Meeting, Mayor Taylor addressed Item F1 on the Agenda, discussing Alderman Sohn's letter to Mayor Taylor regarding the ordinance violations against the Fox's.

If there's one thing that's never lacking on this Common Council, it's the small outbursts of disrespect for each other between those members from the past Council. Usually the Mayor will attempt to control this. But tonight was his turn to turn the knife.

I'll begin with Mayor Taylor and follow up at another time with more audio clips...

On another note, during citizen comment period, the Fox's made an emotional plea asking for understanding. They say they are confused regarding this entire ordeal. I have to say, by speaking, they added another side to this, making this a triangle. This has been going on for over 30 years....

Franklin License Committee Meeting 08/19/08

Before I attended the Common Council meeting tonight, I attended the License Committee meeting.

This is the second License Committee meeting I have attended, and I have been told I am the only observer, citizen or elected official, who has attended since the new committee has been in place. I do not know if anyone ever observed in the past.

It is a very uneventful process, and, for me, at times uncomfortable, as I feel I am intruding in the personal business of people. But in reality, I know it is not "personal business," because if someone is being called before the Committee to discuss whether they should be entitled to a license to be a bartender, and they have had past issues with the law, then it becomes public.

The first time I attended was basically to see what these meetings were all about. Tonight I wanted to ask a couple questions.

The committee consists of the following:

The License Committee is comprised of 3 Aldermen appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council, each to serve a one-year term commencing May 1.

Powers and Duties: It is the duty of this Committee to review applications for business licenses in the City of Franklin and submit their recommendations to the Common Council.

Alderman Solomon is very knowledgeable on this Committee, as Aldermen Wilhelm and Taylor are new this year.

Before I had the chance to ask my questions, Alderman Taylor brought up one of them himself to Alderman Solomon. He mentioned that the Buckhorn has been an isssue on the blogs and citizens are concerned. He asked what the status was.

Alderman Solomon said he has just been in contact with the City Attorney and was told that the License Committee should take no action until they hear from the Special Prosecutor. The License Committee is the jury in the Buckhorn case.

I asked whether there was a time limit regarding how long the Special Prosecutor may take to submit his findings. Alderman Solomon said no, he cold take as long as he needed.

In closing...due process regarding the Buckhorn looks like it can take until hell freezes over...if the Special Prosecutor delays, then the License Committee takes the time they need to be the "jury," before presenting this issue to the full Council, who knows...maybe all of the bartenders will be working somewhere else by then. Maybe the Buckhorn will finally be sold by then. Who knows.

How About Some (Customer) Service?

If there is anything that gets me going it’s poor customer service. Maybe that’s one of the main reasons I would rather shop on the internet rather than venture out into the stores. Granted, glitches can happen on the web, too, but at least I don’t have to deal with rude sales people, standing in long lines, or cashiers who can’t count money and acknowledge my presence or say hello or thank you.

With a slow economy, some businesses are looking into ways to make sure your business is a return business.

"At Lord & Taylor, staffers invite special customers in on their birthdays for cake and fitting-room parties. Moxie, the fashionable Charles Street boutique, has started making home deliveries. Get your oil changed at Sullivan Tire and Auto Service, and expect a phone call within the week - and a free re-do if you're not satisfied. With the economy struggling, some retailers - emphasis on some - are turning up the charm.

"It's all about customer service these days," says John Miller, Sullivan Tire's metro Boston area representative. Miller's made some 2,000 calls since February and says most people are happy to hear from him. "They feel we care, which we do." But awkward situations are not unheard of. One man became suspicious when Miller rang asking to speak to the guy's girlfriend. "He thought we were calling for another reason, if you know what I mean," Miller recalls.

But Miller's motivation, like that of Lord & Taylor's staff, is simply an attempt to keep those scarce dollars coming in. "We're trying to make it a more meaningful experience," says April Stern Riccio, the chain's regional public relations director, explaining that the company has increased a customer outreach program that was instituted as part of a rebranding effort in 2007."

If You See This Guy Headed Back To Franklin, Ignore Him...

Last year we knew something was in our yard at night besides the annoying rabbits. My husband set out a long stainless steel trap and stuffed it with carrots and lettuce. In the morning I heard a lot of ruckus outside by the garden. What the heck was that thing out there? I sent my husband out to take a look. It was a possum and boy was it ugly. It smelled and it was hissing. He was mad.

The other day I came home and found all of the black edging that goes under the concrete stoop torn out and thrown out on the sidewalk. Some animal did that. In the back on my deck it looked as though an animal had been in a couple potted plants and dug large holes. Another mess. Dirt was everywhere. Chipmunks!

We put out a trap and sure enough, we caught one. But I know where there is one, there are ten more.

We’ve heard rumors that if you catch and release chipmunks, and it isn't more than ten miles away, they can make their way back “home.” I find that hard to believe...might as well paint bright numbers on their backs!

This one turned, stood for a minute and just looked, as if to say, " Who do you think you're kidding? I'll be back!" Then he ran off.

If you see this guy...headed back to Franklin, with his belongings slung over his back...

Pay no attention to him.

He's nothing but trouble.

Sticker Shock

"No one seems to know where the mysterious stickers came from -- colorful dots that appeared in this eastern Wisconsin town, apparently placing a value on the most mundane of public objects. An orange dot on a decorative light post is labeled "Art Object, $10,000."

Nearby another sticker declares a green fire hydrant an art object worth $10.

The dots are all around downtown Appleton -- on cigarette-butt containers, trash cans and parking
meters.

They all have "Art Object" typed on them, with prices ranging from one cent to $10,000."

Many people believe this “graffiti “ originated from area college students. But it seems no one will know. Especially if the culprits from the previous year weren’t found out.

An innocent enough scheme…As long as the stickers aren’t destroying any property. And it certainly is a unique way to draw attention to the yearly art festival.

What's Missing From the Franklin Common Council Meeting Agenda?

Tomorrow there will be a regular Common Council Meeting at Franklin City Hall at 6:30 P.M.

Some of you may already know that one item on the Agenda is Item F. Letter from Alderman Sohns to Mayor Taylor regarding property at 5510 W. Rawson Ave.

While I am in support of Alderman Sohn's, I am wondering why I will be attending yet another Common Council Meeting where the "Due Process" regarding the Buckhorn will not be discussed. Why is this not on the Agenda?

I updated you on the trial and sentencing of Eddie Lynn Keck this past week. It's time to hear from our Common Council on this matter.

Time For Your Nature Lesson: New Bird Species Discovered

Well, who doesn’t like a pretty bird?

I spend a fortune feeding them, that’s how much I like them…Goldfinches in particular.

Are there any other bird lovers out there who can explain to me why the price of thistle seed/Nyjer seed doubled in price this year? Is it just because of shipping costs?

That said....

There really has been a new species of bird discovered. Considering how many species of insects and birds there are in the world, I suppose a new one popping up should be expected. But I find it interesting, expecially when it is as pretty as this little guy...

Welcome to a new species of an African Forest Robin from Gabon…Stiphrornis pyrrholaemus

"Scientists at the Smithsonian Institution have discovered a new species of bird in Gabon, Africa, that was, until now, unknown to the scientific community. Their findings were published in the international science journal Zootaxa, Aug. 15.

The newly found olive-backed forest robin (Stiphrornis pyrrholaemus) was named by the scientists for its distinctive olive back and rump. Adult birds measure 4.5 inches in length and average 18 grams in weight. Males exhibit a fiery orange throat and breast, yellow belly, olive back and black feathers on the head. Females are similar, but less vibrant. Both sexes have a distinctive white dot on their face in front of each eye. "

Brian Schmidt, an ornithologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History discovered he had found something new while researching and comparing several different specimens of birds to those already in the Smithsonian's bird collection.

"I suspected something when I found the first bird in Gabon since it didn't exactly match any of the species descriptions in the field guides," said Schmidt. "Once I was able to compare them side by side to other specimens in our collections it was clear that these birds were special. You, of course, have to be cautious, but I was still very excited at the prospect of possibly having found a new species of bird."

The new bird species was first seen in southwest Gabon in 2001during a biological survey of tropical rainforest species.

Draconian Rules Couldn't Stifle A Proud Moment For An Olympian

Tom James, a member of Great Britain’s rowing team, won the second gold medal for the country of Wales, the first going to cyclist Nicole Cook.

Before the beginning of the games, there had been questions as to whether England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland should enter the Olympics separately. Under an archaic Olympic rule, which Beijing is using for political reasons because of the issue of Tibet, they are not allowing the display of flags or banners that are not those of the official countries entered in the Olympics. Not outside the stadium, not in the stadium by fans, not by the athletes themselves.

Tom James’ parents were displaying the Welsh flag in the stands yesterday. After the medal awards ceremony, James displayed the flag. A proud moment for him.

"But Tom said: “I’m a patriotic Welshman – born in Cardiff and living near Wrexham – and it’s brilliant to put Wales on the map at the Olympics.”

Parents Mike and Julia James were on their feet waving the Welsh flag in delight as the bowman crossed the line first in the GB flagship four.And after being given his gold medal on a special presentation pontoon, he took the flag from his dad and proudly waved it in front of the main grandstand.

“I don’t think Wales won any golds in Athens, so it’s brilliant to represent my home nation here and make it a second Welsh gold after Nicole’s brilliant ride,” said Tom.

“I’m so proud of what the Welsh rugby team have done, Nicole did fantastically in the cycling and we’ve still got Tom (Lucy) to come in the rowing tomorrow and Geraint (Thomas) in the velodrome.

“It’s great to be flying the Welsh flag on the world stage. My Dad’s born and bred in Wrexham and is Welsh through and through and so am I.”

Dad Mike wasn’t about to let the flag ban get in the way of celebrating a Welsh victory, handing the flag to his son in front of the grandstand as the crew celebrated a third straight GB Olympic title.“It’s fantastic to see. After all they’ve been through, just brilliant,” he said."

I cannot find anything regarding any protest of James and his display of the Welsh flag. Technically, he could be disqualified. Beijing has already sent protestors home from China for displaying the flag of Tibet.

Ultimate Sunscreen or Mountainous Folly?

For years the German’s have been protecting their highest peak, the Zugspitz, by spreading reflective foil tarps over the ski slopes. They believe this “sun screen” of sorts will fight against “global warming.”

"The cover keeps off the heat and channels away rainwater," said Manfred Haas, who manages a team that grooms the ski area with bulldozers and graders. "Every autumn we make note of where the glacier has melted the most and cover those places the following spring."

The German’s believe covering up glacial areas can highly reduce melting. But they also know that this is not very practical Now they've come up wih a wind screen.

"Geographer Hans-Joachim Fuchs in the western German city Mainz has another idea. He wants to harness the power of cold mountain winds -- so-called kabatic winds, or streams of cold, dense air that flow downhill -- with windscreens. The screens would keep the cool air on top of the glaciers, perhaps preserving them for a little while longer.

Fuchs has been proposing this idea for years, and this week he's putting it to the test. On Monday, Fuchs and 27 students headed to the Rhone glacier in Switzerland to install a windscreen measuring 15 meters long (50 feet) and 3 meters high at an elevation of 2,300 meters (7,545 feet) on the leading edge of the glacier. He'll be measuring the effectiveness of the screen to see if it's a viable solution."

Obama Wisconsin Radio Ad Attacks McCain Over Harley Quip

The Obama Team in Pennsylvania wants to have some fun with John McCain and his "I’d rather hear the roar of "50,000 Harleys" than the cheering of “200,000 Berliners.”

"As the Obama camp was quick to point out, McCain opposed legislation that would have forced the U.S. government to buy American-made motorcycles.

The Obama camp's push on the issue includes running [the recent ad], which was running in the York market and mocks McCain's Harley quote while pointing out McCain's position on American-made bikes, in two new markets in Pennsylvania beginning tomorrow -- the Pittsburgh and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre markets.

Obama's Pennsylvania campaign, the aide says, will be hitting the ground this weekend in around five towns around the state with stickers and flyers bearing the above "Buy American, Vote Obama" logo.

The events will feature a few dozen actual Harley riders for Obama that have been recruited for the weekend's events."Harley riders aren't typically supportive of Democratic candidates," the aide says.

"But we're making a play for them by saying that Obama's economic policies are the true patriotic ones."

If "Buy American, Vote Obama" catches on, it could conceivably be unveiled in other battlegrounds.

It's yet another sign of the Obama camp's efforts to turn the attacks on his patriotism on their head by arguing that McCain is the one who's anti-American-worker. Such arguments have had mixed success, but with the economy topping the list of voter concerns, it's possible that they will land on fertile ground in the struggling industrial battleground states."

Eddie Lynn Keck Sentencing - UPDATE

When Eddie Lynn Keck plead Guilty on June 23rd, his sentencing date was scheduled for July 24, 2008.

That sentencing has since been postponed twice. Sentencing is now scheduled for September 3rd.

Defendant Eddie Lynn Keck in court with attorney Christopher Hartley. Defendant Eddie Lynn Keck in custody. William J Molitor appeared for the State of Wisconsin. As to counts 1 and 3: Defendant was advised of constitutional rights and maximum penalties, waived all rights, plead GUILTY and was examined as to the plea. Plea Questionnaire/Waiver of Rights and Addendum received and filed. Parties stipulate to the complaint as a factual basis for the plea. Court found defendant guilty as charged in the Information.
As to counts 2 and 4: Pursuant to plea negotiations and on motion of State, Court ordered counts dismissed.
Court will order a PSI and remand the defendant. Defense counsel is also having a sentencing memorandum done by Cedar Creek Counseling. Court orders case adjourned to 7-24-2008 in Branch 38 at 8:15a.m. for SENTENCING. ls Sentencing hearing scheduled for 07-24-2008 at 08:15 am.

Myotonic goats are also called Wooden Leg goats, "stiff leg" or Tennessee fainting goats. These are one of the few goats that are indigenous to the U.S. There are two strains of this animal. Most of those found in Tennessee and the eastern U.S. are smaller. Most Texas herds tend to be somewhat larger, probably due to selective breeding for the meat market. In fact, some ranchers have renamed them Tennessee Meat Goats. They also have a market as pets because they are unique. Myotonic means when they are frightened or excited they "lock up" and often fall over (faint) and lie very stiff for a few seconds. It is an over-simplification, but the chemicals which are rushed to humans' muscles and joints to prepare them for "fight or flight" are withheld in the Myotonic under exciting or frightful circumstances.

No one really knows their origin. There are two theories. One of the possibilities is that a private herd sold to a Tennessee farmer around 1880 was the beginning of the breed. A man named John Tinsley arrived in Marshall County, Tennessee, with four goats, a billy and three nannies, which he had brought from Nova Scotia. When he moved on a year later, he left his goats behind. It is believed that all the Fainting goats in the U.S. can trace their orgins back to these four. The other is that there was a spontaneous mutation of a herd in Tennessee about 1885 which resulted in the recessive gene.
