The Case Of the Passionate Readers

 Nancy Drew charm bracelets

Jeri Kosloske  wanted to show the library staff her Nancy Drew-themed charm bracelet, and we were so impressed that we wanted to share it.  Jeri and her friends are avid readers of the Nancy Drew mysteries, and also collectors of the books.

Jeri and her friend Joann Joram also created these charm bracelets by thinking of and collecting  elements of the Nancy Drew stories and combining them with miniature book cover charms. Then they searched eBay for the charms.

Shown here are the two bracelets, and the books collected during many “fun” treks to flea markets and antique malls.  Jeri even found a handbag made from the covers of a Nancy Drew book!

Curious George Visits the Library

By Greenfield Public Library
Wednesday, Jan 14 2009, 03:35 PM

Curious George Visits the Library by Margret and H.A Rey is a children's Easy Book (E Rey) which is close to my heart. In this story, the good and always curious monkey visits the public library for children's story hour with his friend, the man with the yellow hat. After several stories, George leaves to search on his own for other books, amassing quite a stack. He does create a bit of a disturbance in the process, including making off at high speed with a shelving cart. (Let me interject here that we discourage this sort of behavior by monkeys or humans at the Greenfield Public Library). After the mess is cleaned up by a volunteer and some children, a circulation clerk helps George get his very own library card. So, George and the man with the yellow hat each leave with a fine selection of books to read and enjoy. I love happy endings. Don't you?

And here is a note about the authors. "The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941...(and) has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian."

And here is a personal note. This book is close to my heart for three reasons. First. Once upon a time, I was totally ignorant as to why George was always, incessantly, almost compulsively.... curious. Then, one enlightening day, a knowledgeable and helpful co-worker explained to me that it was simply "because he's a monkey!" Wow. It was so easy.  What a fool I'd been. Second. I LOVE libraries. And third. My middle name is George.

Adieu....shelver george

Illustrated Inspiration

By Greenfield Public Library
Monday, Dec 15 2008, 04:41 PM
I have to return the library’s copy of An Illustrated Life by (741 GRE).  I’ve had it checked out for three weeks and it’s not enough, but there are other holds so I must return it.  I’ve been totally enthralled by this book, which features sketchbook pages from dozens of artists.  Each artist has written a narrative to describe how he or she uses the sketchbooks, as well as processes, techniques, tools, and advice to budding artists.  These contributors represent a range of approaches, styles, and backgrounds.  Many use sketchbooks as a form of personal journal, and almost all refer to keeping a sketchbook as a means of developing awareness.
Some artists use fine paper and bind their own books, while others use cheap notebooks and ballpoint pens.  Some bring their sketchbooks everywhere they go.  Some sketch every day at a certain time.  It’s fascinating, and I’ve been inspired enough to go out and buy a moleskine landscape watercolor book, though I’m a bit intimidated by the blank pages (which is also addressed in this book).  If you are an artist, or one who journals, or doodles, or makes collages out of movie tickets and gum wrappers, or are just interested in a range of personal stories, you’ll find this book interesting.

Wonderful Tonight

By Greenfield Public Library
Monday, Oct 27 2008, 11:06 AM

Beatlemaniacs know the answer to this question, so let someone else try to answer. In the film A Hard Day's Night, one of the uniformed schoolgirls serenaded with I Should Have Known Better by the fab four on the train ends up marrying one of them in real life. Who, and to whom? Of course, London fashion model Pattie Boyd eventually marries George Harrison.

Raised in unloving homes, Pattie's story is a unique perspective on the rock music scene of the 60's and beyond, because she was a still-rising successful woman not about to be someone's groupie. Not being an actress, she didn't want to be in the Beatle movie, but did it because the director, Richard Lester, with whom she had done a television commercial, persuaded her. Good choice, Pattie. Thanks for being the muse for two classic songs, Something by George Harrison and Layla by Eric Clapton, who subsequently wooed her away from George.

This is a must read for Beatle fans and anyone wanting a woman's take on this era of rock music history. Not to mention her personal history, growth, and just how she coped with the infidelity, drug use and musical genius of these high-powered men. I love the anecdote of how Joni Mitchell and Pattie (Boyd) Harrison sat and watched Frank Sinatra record My Way in an LA studio in one take. This autobiography is full of tidbits like that. And how's she doing now? Guess you'll just have to read Wonderful Tonight  George Harrison  Eric Clapton  and Me  by Pattie Boyd with Penny Juror published by Harmony in 2007. You'll find it in the Greenfield library at the beginning of nonfiction books in biographies under Boyd.

How I Use My Public Library

By Greenfield Public Library
Thursday, Oct 9 2008, 01:51 PM
A few years ago, some friends (librarians!) tried to teach me how to knit, with little success.  Then I got kittens, who definitely had other things in mind when I pulled out the yarn, so I set the tangled mess aside.  But on a vacation, I decided to try again.  I bought some yarn and needles and had the store owner cast-on for me.  When I got stuck, I drove to the Boulder Junction Library and found the easiest knitting how-to directions (in a kids’ book), and tried again.  Since then, I’ve been hooked.  I knit everywhere, and am constantly scouring the new-and old- knitting books for interesting patterns.  One recent project came from the book No Sheep for You, edited by Amy Singer, a book intended for those allergic or otherwise averse to using animal fibers (746.432 SIN).  The River Rock scarf, designed by Sivia Harding, involved some 1067 beads, strung ahead of time, and pulled in between the stitches in pattern.  A totally ridiculous project, that took much of my summer, and was immensely satisfying in the end.  The glass bead clusters look like little stained glass windows, and give the scarf a warm gravity when I try it on.  I’m happy with it, and happy to have library resources to support my habits.

A Message from the Library Director

By Greenfield Public Library
Tuesday, Aug 12 2008, 05:06 PM

We will have a new library after all! On August 7th, the Greenfield  Common Council voted in the affirmative to provide an additional $625,000 funding through a low cost state loan. This step will allow us to sign the construction contract for the new Library immediately. We are moving ahead quickly to begin construction this month, and the groundbreaking ceremony has been set for Tuesday afternoon, August 26 at 4:30.  The public is invited to join us and help us celebrate this important moment in our City’s life.

On behalf of the Library Board, library staff and library supporters, we wish to thank Mayor Neitzke and all members of the Greenfield Common Council for their consideration during the difficult process of securing funding so that we can make this community-wide dream come true.  We look forward enthusiastically to a future when we will be better able to serve the Greenfield community with a real children’s library, a teen space, an easily accessible large print area specially designed for seniors and the visually handicapped, a community room for civic and cultural events, and adequate space for library users of all ages and interests. I know that I speak for the Board and all the staff in making a pledge to the community: we dedicate ourselves to make this a library the entire community will enjoy and be proud of for many years to come. Please join us August 26 to help us celebrate!

Sincerely,

Sheila O’Brien, Director

Greenfield Public Library
