Paul's Falls

I have lived in the Falls since 1968. My great-great grandfather was one of the village founders. I have served the community in multiple ways: Firefighter, various boards and commissions and for many years was president of the Falls Cable Access Corp. Currently I own, and am active in, a restaurant equipment manufacturing company.

An Uncomfortable Feeling

By Paul Wickesberg
Thursday, Jan 31 2008, 06:26 PM

 I don't know why.
There is no immediately apparent reason for my feelings - but something is putting me on edge.

No, I'm not hearing the voices.  I'm much better now.

But, all kidding aside, somethings are making me edgy. Some self analysis reveals my feelings:
I do not care for any of the presidential candidates that have survived this far.
I'm hoping that President Bush doesn't start something else that we can't finish.
Our natural resources are running out faster than they can be replenished.
Our monetary system (US dollars) is/are shrinking relative to the rest of the world.
I am treated like a criminal when I take a trip on an airline for vacation.
"No child left behind" has left our school "No money left at all".

I could go on and on a lot more, but:
THIS IS SUPERBOWL (oops, I meant the big game) WEEKEND.

I will  repress the above for a few days and enjoy the um, S*%^!  Bow#!
Enjoy the game!I have

Disclaimer: I  have been asked to publish the following response to this blog. It was submitted by Andy Mohrfeld. His views regarding the school system are often quite different than my own. I'm suggesting that Andy contact Journal Communications and set up a blog of his own. It is easy to do and he will have free reign to express his views in detail.

The Promotion Was A Bad Dream At Our House

By Paul Wickesberg
Friday, Jan 25 2008, 01:42 PM

My wife Meg came home somewhat grumpy the other day after the weekly grocery shopping.  It seems that she run into some of the same issues reported by Kimberly in another blog on this website.

It's the last day of the grocery store rebate promotion and with just one more point there would be a step-up to the next level.  Drat! There's no way in the world to get it in time. The frustration builds and the time for checkout comes followed by moments of sputtering and muttering.  Unlike Kimberly's experience there was no kindly checkout fairy to supply the missing point in this case.  "$@*+!^&"   Of course, one way to relieve the inner tension is to tell hubby all about it - a kind of catharsis for a harried shopper.

So, I'm guessing that this scene must have played out in a number of households this week.  Perhaps the goodwill created by this rebate program caused more than a little consternation and ill will.

If it were up to me I'd gladly settle for a game of chance - perhaps a scratch off card or the like.  Sorry, you didn't win this time. Come back again tomorrow.

Three Cheers For Our Hometown Airline

By Paul Wickesberg
Monday, Jan 14 2008, 02:26 PM

Two separate "vacations" caused me to miss regular postings on this blog since Christmas.  One week we spent some time with good friends in the State of Washington, and the other found us in Florida near NASA's launch facility.

In each case we flew on Midwest Express.  What a joy!  The six inches more legroom than airline U provides was sweet.  Wow, no cramps from sitting in a fetal position. The food was ok - average.  It's been a while since my last trip on Midwest, so I was a bit surprised to find that cash is no longer accepted for food or drink purchases aboard the plane.  Credit cards only.

A second surprise was that their wonderful cookies are no longer served on flights that leave before 10:30 a.m. I'll make note to myself to take that into account next time we book a flight.

Maybe it was just luck, but for the most part my flights arrive on time at their destinations.  On the last flight home we actually left 15 minutes early as all passengers were already on board.  My hat's off to the gentlemen and ladies that made my air travel a lot more fun than was expected.

Menomonee Falls Spring Election

By Paul Wickesberg
Wednesday, Jan 2 2008, 05:27 PM

 It is official!

We are having a contest for a position on the Village Board to be determined in the April election.
Once again, I urge that all candidates prove that they can properly add up a column of 20 numbers and come up with the correct result.

That hasn't happened two elections in a row for an individual running for office in the past.

May the best candidates win!
