Vocabulary

By Paul Wickesberg
Saturday, Jul 19 2008, 12:49 PM

Recently one of my sons noticed that another blogger on these pages often uses the 'royal we' in his posts.
He sent me the following snippet from an internet site he belongs to.

royal we

PRONUNCIATION:
(ROI-uhl wee)

MEANING:
noun: The first-person plural pronoun used by a king or queen to refer to himself or herself, for example, "We are not amused," a line attributed to Queen Victoria.

As it's often used by newspaper editors, the term is also known as the "editorial we". Mark Twain once said, "Only kings, presidents, editors, and people with tapeworms have the right to use the editorial 'we'."

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin nos (we). The practice of using "we" to refer to oneself is called nosism.

USAGE:

"Sir Mick leads the way, a smirk on those impossibly exaggerated lips. 'How are we all?' he asks. It's appropriate he uses the royal we -- after all, they've reigned supreme for almost half a century."
Gaynor Flynn; They Still Gather No Moss; The Sun Herald (Sydney, Australia); May 18, 2008.

Artistry

By Paul Wickesberg
Friday, Feb 15 2008, 01:51 PM

Art is most often thought of as the creation of a painting, a sculpture, or the like.  One rarely takes notice of a myriad of other artistic endeavors that swirl around our busy lives every day.  For example, a carpenter building a new chest of drawers.  He takes the rough lumber and, if he's not me, creates a thing of beauty. Or a plumber - designing and building a system that has to not only fit into a constrained area, but look good as well.

This morning I experienced an artist at work. I awoke early and notice a village snow plow in our cul-de-sac dealing with yesterday's snowall. Recent snows have more than filled available areas for storage but alas there was still more.  Watching the driver maneuver his rig around the court kept my attention.  Where was he going to go with it all?  Would it end up in front of my driveway?

I shouldn't have worried.  With the finesse learned from experience he operated his rig as gracefully as a ballet dancer on a stage.  Move the snow a foot here, a foot there, adjust the wing blades while on the go, and then the job is done. The final result was clean pavement with no driveways obstructed.  Beautiful, a true artist!

On Sunday there will be a repeat performance, I understand.  I have front row tickets.

Politics With A Twist

By Paul Wickesberg

Disclaimer:  I lean toward the Libertarian philosophy - conservative with a buck, and liberal with your personal freedoms.

Today Don Imus returned to the airwaves around the country on several venues.  No matter how you might feel about his on-air remarks a few months ago, this maverick of the airways has a way of interviewing political candidates and pundits that is not regulated by a "party line" or sponsor/network influences.

If you really want to know about a national candidate and his/her feelings, you might give his program a chance. He is irreverent, and doesn't hold back his feelings about controversial  issues.

His program is on from 6 to 9  a.m. in this area.  You will find him with a live stream at wabc.com on the internet, or the RFD-TV channel on selected local cable and satellite channels.  Imus is not for everyone.  My Aunt Maude would probably be spinning in her grave if she ever heard that I was writing this.

But, she can't.  So, fair warning - perhaps you might enjoy his show.
