Local Government Salaries

By Richard J. Steinberg

BROOKFIELD NOW publishes municipal salaries for 2006, and for the City of Brookfield, one can only assume are now higher than the 2 years old survey.

A number of persons, excluding the police and fire departments, who work at city hall are very well paid.

Of course, these loyal employees are considered the elite of city government and their skills are judged by someone to be deserving.

At least 9 employees are paid over $90,000 annually and this amount presumably does not include fringe benefits which may not have been included in the survey, and should be revealed.

The salary figures probably do not include special allowance , if any, for transportation, gasoline, meals, conventions, meetings, social gatherings, golf outings, memberships, luncheons, dinners, and other expenses that the city determines are related to the job.

The survey only stated "job title", and omits job descriptions and accountability.

Based on the assumption that these salaries are set by city ordinance or some other methodology, it is fair to say that the city taxpayers have nothing to say.

Oversight seems to be absent as is some type of public venue to determine performance.

There must be more information made public because the public has the right to know.

After all, taxpayers foot the bills.

Your article says nothing except that you personally feel that nobody in city government should be making over $90,000. You've listed none of the occupations in order for us readers to make our own judgement. I will say that I am not a big advocate for overpaid city employees, but I also understand that $90,000 per year is not an obscene amount of money and some occupations command that much for good people. For instance, upper level civil engineers, mayors, some JUDGES, and attorneys working for municipalities may merit that pay range.

Every article that critisizes and tries to stir up thought should contain all the information needed to make an educated opinion. Yours' sounds like just another rant against government.

I'm El gato and I approve of your rant!  Government employees used to whine that they were paid less than the private sector.  They used that mantra to jack their salaries up above the private sector along with benefits that far surpass the private sector.  The docile taxpayers just continue to foot the bill and say little about it.  $90K per year is a damn good salary and way too many people are being overpaid in government and the private sector for what they do.

Greed is what it's all about!  Everyone seems to think they should be paid more than they are.

I think we agree that $90,000 per year is a good salary. You're not rich, but you are surely above average. If the citizens of a community are to debate the pay scale for certain employees, I think we should look at the occupation, hours spent on the job, and the value we are getting back. To rant about an amount without knowing what we are getting for it is ignorant. For all we know, there could be a $15,000 per year librarian that is sleeping in the storage room all day. I'd be more concerned about that $15,000 than a $90,000 per year attorney who saved taxpayers millions by doing a good job. I'm as hard right as they get when holding public employees accountable, but I believe in knowing all my facts before shooting my mouth off.

Recent cites by BrookfieldNOW under Municipal Employee Salaries for 2006 ran for a substantial time period. The information was listed there. City government has a duty to cut spending in all areas and salaries and benefits are just one area.

See the web for police and fire department salaries.

The latest municipal judge salary was $28,500 annual with no health insurance or other personal allowances.

BrookfieldNow also reports that 10 City of Brookfield employees earn over $75,000 annually. This information had already been published and my recital is a reference to that information.

Our beloved USA was, in part, founded by our forefathers who firmly protested the British taxes and other impositions, to feather the nest of the British royalty.
