Village Promotes All the Great Reasons To Live, Work and Shop in Shorewood!

The name says it all: Showcase Shorewood! And that’s exactly what we plan to do when the spotlight is on our Village and all the great reasons to live, work and shop here. Showcase Shorewood will take place on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the Shorewood business district. The day will be filled with exciting activities including sidewalk sales, special in-store promotions, and a fine art and craft fair and business expo on the lawn of Shorewood High School. Free trolley rides will provide convenient transportation along Oakland and Capitol to see all the action. Plus, live music will be performed all day on the high school lawn. 5th Annual Criterium Cycling Classic Rolls Into Shorewood on July 17
Presented by the Shorewood Foundation

Get ready, Shorewood! The summer’s most fantastic bike race, the 5th annual Shorewood Criterium, returns to our Village on Thursday, July 17. This popular event is part of the Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic - also known as “Superweek” - the world’s largest, multi-category cycling event in the U.S. This 40th annual event will take place from July 11-27 and feature races in 12 city centers throughout eastern Wisconsin.The Criterium is a powerful fusion of the best athletes in the world and today’s high-tech bicycles in an explosion of speed, power and excitement. The event features hundreds of top professional and elite amateur cyclists and teams from across the U.S. plus more than 20 foreign countries!

This year’s Criterium is presented by the Shorewood Foundation with Major/Title Sponsors Tim Hart D.D.S and Rainbow Jersey Bicycles. The race is produced by the Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID).

The race will again wind its way through the heart of Shorewood’s business district and neighboring residential streets. “We’re excited about bringing this great race back to our community for the fifth year in a row,” says Tim Ryan, President of the Shorewood BID Board of Directors. “The Criterium’s successful record of attracting thousands of spectators and potential shoppers offers many advantages to businesses and we encourage everyone to join in and help promote the race.”

The men’s and women’s Pro/Am races will start at approximately 4 p.m. The day’s events will also feature a Junior Bike Roll for neighborhood children ages 3-7 with helmets. Plus, Shorewood shoppers are encouraged to register to win one of two Trek Lime bicycles by visiting any participating Shorewood business. Winners will be drawn at approximately 8 p.m. after the races are over on July 17.

Many communities and neighborhoods have reported that streetscape projects jump-start business traffic and energize economic development opportunities. It is anticipated that Shorewood will be no exception! Later this summer, the business district will experience the benefits of improved street lighting, enhanced crosswalk safety features, new benches, planters, and trash receptacles, and landscaping beautification. Way-finding signs/kiosks and public art are being discussed for the future. After the streetscaping project is completed, Shorewood’s new “look” will be unveiled in late summer.

Showcase Awards Honor Shorewood Business Owners

The Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID) has initiated the Showcase Awards to recognize businesses that support and make an important difference to the commercial vitality of Shorewood. The five winners of the 2007 awards were announced at the BID’s Annual Meeting on October 24.

Three Shorewood businesses received awards as Showcase Businesses of the Year in recognition of their outstanding leadership, dedication and support of the mission of the Shorewood BID. The three award recipients were also cited for their involvement and major contributions to community projects and special events.

Deborah Kern, owner of The Garden Room, a garden store at 2107 E. Capitol Drive. Kern made a significant investment in her property, including the creation of a unique, 1900-sq.-ft. “green roof” garden.

      John and Ann Nehring, owners of Nehring’s Sendik’s on Oakland, at 4027 N. Oakland, a long-established Shorewood food market with a tradition for quality. The Nehrings renovated the interior of the store and added new departments and products.
     Noah Christensen, owner of the Shorewood Press, a full-service printing at 4060 N. Oakland Avenue. Christensen did extensive remodeling on his building, and was one of the first to take advantage of the BID’s Façade Improvement Program.

    Two other Shorewood businesses received the year’s Showcase Façade Improvement Award recognizing new, exciting property investments that enhance the physical and pedestrian environment in Shorewood.
     Rich Schmidt, owner of The Oakcrest Tavern at 4022 N. Oakland Avenue, one of the newest additions to Shorewood’s business district. Schmidt completely remodeled the interior of the space and made enhancements to the exterior of the property.

Michael Schramm, owner and founder of Schramm & Company, Inc. Realtors and Schramm Management, an investment real estate and property management firm. Schramm recently completed major exterior renovations to his multi-tenant building in the 2300 block of E. Capitol Drive.

In announcing the awards, Tim Ryan, President of the Shorewood BID Board of Directors, said Shorewood was extremely fortunate to have business leaders who are willing to make investments in the future of the community. “They are leading the way and setting the pace for a new vitality in the Shorewood business district. The entire community is grateful to them.”

On Saturday, September 15, Village of Shorewood residents and guests enjoyed all the great reasons to live, work and shop in Shorewood during the second annual “Showcase Shorewood” event.

From fine art and fine crafts created by local talent, to sidewalk sales, musical entertainment and a business expo, the Shorewood business district showcased all the great reasons to Shop Shorewood: Spend the Day!

Spotlight on Shorewood with Showcase Shorewood Event on September 15

Village of Shorewood residents and guests will get to experience what makes Shorewood such a great place to live, work and shop during the second annual “Showcase Shorewood” on Saturday, September 15. From fine art and fine crafts created by local talent, to sidewalk sales, musical entertainment and a business expo, the Shorewood business district will showcase all the great reasons to Shop Shorewood - Spend the Day!

Bring the whole family and enjoy a great day in the Village of Shorewood. Shop our stores and boutiques, have coffee or dinner in one of our cafes or award-winning restaurants. And stop by the high school grounds and discover one-of-a-kind artwork by local artists and talk to area business owners. Showcase Shorewood will be staged throughout the business district along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day’s festivities will include:

- Sidewalk sales staged by area retailers throughout the business district.
- Well-known caricature artist Bill Begos will be drawing free caricature portraits in front of Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, 4093 N. Oakland Ave. from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
- A fine art and fine craft fair on the lawn of Shorewood High School, 1701 E. Capitol Dr., featuring fiber, jewelry, ceramics, leather, glass, painting, photography and mixed media by local and regional artists.
- A business expo on the high school grounds featuring area businesses and community groups.
- Live music performed by local talent on the high school grounds all day from 10-5.
- Rummage To Benefit the Arts: A rummage sale in the high school’s north gym to benefit the art department and Art Club.
- Face painting by the Art Club on the high school grounds.
- See a fire engine truck at the high school and learn about fire-fighting equipment and safety, compliments of the North Shore Fire Department.
- A visit from crime-fighting dog McGruff, the mascot of the North Shore Police Department and Seymour Savings, the mascot of North Shore Bank.

Shoppers can see all the action by enjoying free trolley rides from 11-3 along Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr., compliments of Northshore Funeral Services and the Shorewood Men’s Club. Also, food and beverages will be for sale from the Shorewood Booster Club on the high school grounds to benefit student-athletes.

Criterium Brings Excitement to Shorewood

Shorewood’s exciting Criterium Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic drew thousands of spectators and shoppers to the downtown business district on Thursday, July 19, as professional racers from the U.S. and abroad thrilled us with their superb cycling skills. The event was part of the International Cycling Classic - also known as “Superweek” - the longest-running, multi-day bicycle race in the U.S.

It was super exciting to get an up-close view of this amazing event. Oakland Avenue was filled with thousands of spectators as racers showed off their talents while racing through the business district and adjoining neighborhood. Fans lined up along the curbs and in their front yards – many hosting parties for their neighbors and friends! A climbing wall at the north end of Pick ‘n Save was a fun addition for kids, with donations benefiting Gilda’s Club. And outdoor dining at Shorewood’s many restaurants and pubs was definitely the thing to do to get in on all the action!

Two new Trek Lime bicycles were given away to lucky winners Heather Bradley and Melinda Boucek in our special Enter To Win Giveaway – congratulations!

This year’s Criterium was presented by the Shorewood Foundation with Title Sponsors Tim Hart D.D.S and Rainbow Jersey Bicycles. The race was produced by the Shorewood Business Improvement District. We also gratefully acknowledge the generosity and support of our many other sponsors, as well as the Shorewood Police Department and Shorewood DPW - and the Shorewood Booster Club for dishing up the burgers and hot dogs!

The event went so smoothly because of the cooperation of businesses and residents who graciously overlooked the short inconvenience of some of the streets being closed to traffic. We appreciate and thank you for your support in making this a great fun summer event in Shorewood!

Criterium Cycling Classic Rolls Into Shorewood on July 19

4th Annual Criterium Cycling Classic Rolls Into Shorewood on July 19.

Get ready, Shorewood! The summer’s most fantastic bike race, the 4th annual Shorewood Criterium, returns to our village on Thursday, July 19. This popular event is part of the International Cycling Classic – also known as “Superweek” – the longest-running, multi-day bicycle race in the U.S. The 2007 series marks the 38th year of this two-week stage race run in 12 cities in Eastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

The Criterium is a powerful fusion of the best athletes in the world and today’s high-tech bicycles in an explosion of speed, power and excitement. The event features hundreds of top professional and elite amateur cyclists and teams from across the U.S. plus more than 20 foreign countries! The race will again wind its way through the heart of Shorewood’s business district and neighboring residential streets.

“We’re excited about bringing this great race to our community for the fourth year in a row,” says BID Executive Director Jim Plaisted. “The Criterium’s successful record of attracting thousands of spectators and potential shoppers offers many advantages to businesses and we encourage everyone to join in and help promote the race.”

The men’s and women’s Pro/Am races will start at approximately 4 p.m. The day’s events will also feature a Junior Bike Roll for neighborhood children ages 2-7.
